Information About the Disease

CMV is a common virus that infects most people at some time during their lives but rarely causes obvious illness. It is a member of the herpes virus family. Like other herpes viruses, CMV infection can become dormant for a while and may reactivate at a later time. The virus is carried by people and is not associated with food, water or animals.

CMV can be a problem in individuals with weak immune systems such as people with HIV/AIDS, those on chemotherapy, and infants. Treatment consists of antiviral medications given after a person catches the virus or preventatively if a person is in a high risk group.

For more information visit the Centers for Disease Control website or call 888-232-6348.

If you are concerned about infant CMV, you can also visit the Congenital Cytomegalovirus Foundation website or call 800-201-7320.
