About the Disease

Hypophosphatasia (HPP) is a rare metabolic bone disease that affects the development, specifically the calcification or hardening, of bones and teeth, resulting in weakened bones and gum disease. Hypophosphatasia is also known as deficiency of alkaline phosphatase, or Rathbun disease. Subtypes include: perinatal, infantile, childhood (mild versus severe), adult, odontohypophosphatasia, pseudohypophosphatasia.
