Michael Riotto: using his story to make a difference

In July 2011, Michael Riotto was given only three months to live following a diagnosis of Multiple Myeloma, an incurable blood cancer.

During those initial months, Michael’s out-of-pocket prescription costs were an unbelievable $12,000 every month. After insurance, Michael and his family were left with $400 copays that quickly added up. Michael’s family skipped vacations and struggled sending his children to college due to the cost of ensuring Michael could access the treatment he desperately needed.

“My family gave up an incredible amount of things for many years to keep me alive,” Michael shared.

Soon after, Michael learned that he was eligible for a grant from the PAN Foundation. He was overjoyed when he was approved and felt the relief of receiving financial assistance.

But it was the experience of struggling with high out-of-pocket costs and the sacrifices of his family that inspired Michael’s advocacy journey.

Raising your voice—whether it’s an email, phone call, or visit to Capitol Hill or your state legislature—makes all the bit of a difference that you can think about.”

Now, several years after his three-month prognosis, Michael is continuing to share his story with PAN and other national nonprofit organizations to advocate for change and make a difference. Most recently, he attended PAN’s second annual Advocacy Action Summit in Washington, DC, where he was recognized with the Advocacy Impact Award.

Michael currently serves as a member of the PAN Foundation Patient and Family Advisory Council (PFAC). By sharing key insights and feedback related to healthcare access and affordability issues, in this role Michael serves as a key ambassador and advisor to the work of PAN.

“If I can help just one person navigate a better life, I feel like I’ve made a difference,” Michael shared. “I’m honored to be serving on the PAN Foundation’s Patient and Family Advisory Council and look forward to all the good work ahead.”

Outside of his advocacy work, Michael is an avid health and fitness enthusiast who truly believes in living life every day to the fullest.
